One issue I would like to present in regards to DE is: What would be the pros and cons of having an individual DE department/division on campus. For example at the institution I work for, a public community college, we recently created anf filled a Dean of Distance Education.

So, rather than being tied specifically to the Education department, the DE department would stand alone? That sounds like an intersting idea. I can image they would act as an advisor for all other departments that want to use DE to teach. That would be a huge improvement over teachers stumbling through their own attempts at using technology to teach, without any theory or design behind their actions. I suppose a con would be the orientation needed for the other departments to understand the functions and services of the DE department. I'm sure there'd be many people who would confuse the DE department with a techie/IT service.
